TEHRAN, Apr 21, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin met here Sunday morning with Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran.
Khamenei extended warm welcome to Jiang's visit and said that Iran and China have had a long history of communication and the Iranian people have always seen the Chinese people as friends.
The bilateral relations of cooperation between Iran and China have developed rapidly, he noted, hoping that the friendly cooperation between the two countries would be further strengthened in various fields.
Jiang said that both China and Iran are important nations in Asia and have played an important role in regional and international affairs.
He believed that the bilateral cooperation would reach a new level in various fields in the new century on the basis of mutual respect and equality.
In the afternoon, Jiang is expected to visit the carpet museum in Tehran. Later Sunday, he is scheduled to attend a send-off ceremony hosted by Iranian President Seyyed Mohammad Khatami.
Jiang is scheduled to leave Tehran for Beijing on April 22. He flew in Shiraz last Thursday to kick off his state visit to Iran, the last leg of his two-week five-nation trip, following his state visit to Germany, Libya, Nigeria and Tunisia.
