Musharraf rules out involvement of Pak based Al-Qaeda in attacks Tuesday July 26 2005 00:25 IST PTI
ISLAMABAD: Ruling out involvement of Pakistan-based Al-Qaeda operatives in the attacks in London and Egypt, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Monday said the terror outfit’s command and communication system has been eliminated in the country.
"We have shattered and eliminated their command system," Musharraf said adding that now the Al-Qaeda are in small penny packets on the mountains.
"Their communication has been destroyed and now they bank on courier network and it takes them at least two months for passing one message," he told a meeting of editors in Lahore.
"Is it possible in this situation that an Al-Qaeda man sitting here, no matter who he is, may control things in London, Sharm El-Sheik, Istanbul or Africa? This is absolutely wrong," he said.
Musharraf’s remarks follow reports that Egyptian police were looking for six Pakistanis for their alleged involvement in the deadly weekend bombings in Sharm El-Sheik in Egypt.
He said Al-Qaeda "sanctuaries" in Pakistan’s tribal regions have been overrun, and security forces have captured 700 of its fighters.
Rubbishing suggestions that the terror outfit has its headquarters in Pakistan, Musharraf said "the world must understand that this Al-Qaeda has become a phenomenon - it has no command structure originating from Pakistan and conveying messages to the whole world to do this act and do that act under total coordination of some commander."
