According to Japan's Kyodo News, Hiroshima Governor Yuzan Fujita sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. President George W. Bush, calling on the United States to cancel its planned test. In the letter, Fujita said plans to conduct such a test would further stimulate nuclear-powered nations and could pose threat to the international community. Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba also released a statement of protest, in which he said such a test betrays people's wish for the eradication of nuclear weapons around the world. Nagasaki Mayor Iccho Ito said he sent a protest message to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo over the U.S. announcement. Ito criticized the U.S. plan as "unforgivable," as it contravenes calls from the international community for the enforcement of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty on nuclear weapons as soon as possible. The U.S. government announced Monday it will conduct the subcritical test, which does not involve nuclear explosions, an underground test site in Nevada in order to gather new data.
