Bush favors 'ultimate' penalty for Saddam
WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- President George W. Bush said Tuesday Saddam Hussein should be executed for crimes against the Iraqi people, but noted it was not his decision to impose.
"He is a torturer, a murderer, and they had rape rooms, and this is a disgusting tyrant who deserves justice, the ultimate justice," Bush told Diane Sawyer during an interview for ABC's Primetime. "But that will be decided not by the President of the United States, but by the citizens of Iraq in one form or another."
Bush's interview was to air Tuesday night.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush had expressed a personal view: "I think he was talking about his view. But he made it very clear that it's not (his) view that matters -- it's the view of the Iraqi people that matters."
