An Iraqi ambassador says he believes Saddam is dead Friday, April18, 2003, 10:31 AM
Belgrade, Serbia-Montenegro-AP -- An Iraqi envoy loyal to Saddam Hussein says he believes the Iraqi leader was killed in the bombing of Baghdad.
Iraq's ambassador to Belgrade (Sami Sadoun), tells The Associated Press he does not believe Baghdad would have collapsed so quickly if Saddam was alive.
The envoy -- who headed the Iraqi Cabinet for 25 years -- says he lost all contact with his superiors in Baghdad early this month after a U-S warplane bombed a restaurant where Saddam was believed to be meeting with his sons.
But he says it's possible Saddam was actually killed in a later attack -- noting that the Iraqi leader was on the move, eluding his enemies.
The comments come as new videotaped footage of Saddam surfaces. The tape from Arab television -- which is said to be from last week -- shows him greeting supporters on the streets of Baghdad.
