Report: Britain spied on Kofi Annan
LONDON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A former British cabinet member says British agents spied on U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan prior to the war in Iraq.
Clare Short, the former International Development Secretary who quit the cabinet in protest of the war made the allegations during an interview with the BBC.
Asked whether British agencies had been involved in spying activities against Annan, Short said: "I know. I have seen transcripts of Kofi Annan's conversations."
Prime Minister Tony Blair's office later insisted Britain's intelligence services always act within the law. A spokesman said in a statement: "We never comment on intelligence matters. Our intelligence and security agencies act in accordance with national and international law at all times."
In the first official U.N. response to Short's comments, Hassen Fodha, the organization's director in Brussels, said there was no need for governments to bug the organization, The Guardian said.
"The U.N. works in full transparency. There is no need to spy or to go through secret channels," Fodha said.
