U.S. Plane Joins Attack on Rebels in Najaf
Tue Aug 24, 2004 04:48 PM ET

NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - A U.S. AC-130 gunship joined an attack on Shi'ite militant positions near a shrine in the southern Iraqi city of Najaf on Tuesday, a Reuters witness said.
Several blasts were heard after the plane started circling above the battered city. Hours earlier, the Iraqi government warned it would wipe out the militants if they did not surrender.

The AC-130's rapid-fire cannon hit targets, making a sound like a jack hammer. U.S. helicopters circled over Najaf and an American warplane could also be heard.

Iraqi police and security forces, who appeared in the battle zone for the first time on Tuesday, sealed off several streets before the attack began.

U.S. AC-130 planes have pounded positions held by rebels loyal to rebel Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr for several nights. In a 3-week standoff, Sadr's aides have fluctuated between saying they will fight to the death and offering to negotiate to hand over control of the shrine.
