It said three armored vehicles were disabled by insurgents in the mainly Shi'ite Sadr City suburb, a hotbed for loyalists of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. "Attacks by Sadr's militiamen have put more than 15,000 Iraqis out of work on construction projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the people of Sadr City," the statement quoted Major Phil Smith, the deputy public affairs officer for the 1st Cavalry Division, as saying. At least 704 soldiers have been killed in combat since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq last year.
