U.S. Military Confirms 12 Marines Killed in Iraq Wed Apr 7, 2004 07:41 AM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military confirmed on Wednesday that 12 Marines were killed in a seven-hour battle in the Sunni Muslim town of Ramadi in western Iraq on Tuesday. The deaths bring to 441 the number of U.S. troops killed in action in Iraq since the invasion last year to oust Saddam Hussein. The U.S. military has suffered 31 combat deaths in Iraq since Sunday.
"Eleven Marines died while engaged with the anti-Iraqi forces for more than seven hours; one died from wounds suffered during the firefight," the U.S. military said in a statement.
Marines began a major operation this week to crack down on guerrillas in the cities of Ramadi and Falluja, in Iraq's Sunni heartland where most of the insurgency against occupying troops has been concentrated.
