NewsMine war-on-terror iraq dissent protests oct26-protest Viewing Item | Firenancy letter Dear NPR,
I find the NPR coverage of the peace march in Washington absolutely reprehensible, not just the under reported numbers but the "views" she chose to quote. However, I do not favor firing Nancy Marshall. I am quite sure she was reporting the event as her bosses want it reported -- in ways that both minimize and sneer at the peace movement in this country.
The people who need to be fired are the people in charge at NPR. They set the tone and standard for reporting on the Bush march to war. It is all of a piece with coverage that consistently ignores history and context, that refuses to cover in an ongoing way the suffering of the people of Iraq, the pivotal role played by the Palestinian conflict, the centrality of oil, corporate power and its connections to this administration, and the drive for world dominance that underlies all the administration’s pious rhetoric.
I would like to see this turnover of management at NPR soon. If, heaven help us, we do go to war, we need a major news source that doesn’t allow itself to be completely controlled by the Pentagon, led around like puppy on a string as happened in the first Gulf War. That source should be our public media, funded by our tax dollars.
I have very little hope that we will see the needed "regime change" at NPR. What I am certain of is that the peace movement is large and growing in both size and effectiveness. You are already starting to see what we can accomplish together. You will not be able to ignore or put us down for long.
