Decorated US Marine dies in Californian shooting October 23, 2003
A Cambodian immigrant, who joined the US Marine Corps and took part in the rescue of Private Jessica Lynch in Iraq, has been murdered.
Corporal Sok Khak Ung, 22, died on Monday after being shot in the head and torso by an unknown assailant at a family barbecue in Long Beach, south of Los Angeles, just 12 days before he was to have been discharged.
Long Beach police said the gunman reached over a fence and shot into the crowd, hitting Corporal Ung and also killing his friend, 21-year-old Vouthy Tho.
Police and family members were searching for a motive and have asked for the public's help in identifying the gunman, who ran from the scene.
"He was calling for me and I was holding him," his father, Yoeun Ung, a retired veteran of the Cambodian armed services, tearfully told the Los Angeles Times. "He was a good boy. Yes, I was proud."
Born in a Philippine refugee camp, Corporal Ung had taken the US oath of citizenship just last month.
He was part of a unit that engaged in diversionary tactics to allow the US Special Forces to rescue wounded Ms Lynch on April 1 from the Iraqi hospital where she was treated after being captured.
Corporal Ung had returned from Iraq last July, where he served as a combat engineer with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton, near San Diego.
His main wartime job was disposing of stockpiles of ordnance that were left behind by Saddam Hussein's army, a Marine spokesman, Bill Lisbon, said.
He was clearing explosive caches in Nassiriyah on April 7 when a Marine nearby stepped on an explosive device and Corporal Ung was hit by shrapnel, Sergeant Lisbon said
Corporal Ung returned to his unit and later received the Purple Heart medal for being wounded in action.
"The saddest detail in this whole story is that on the day he was killed he only had 12 days left in Marine Corps," Sergeant Lisbon said. "He had almost finished his four-year commitment."
