Monday, May 19, 2003 Questions about a dramatic rescue
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD
Truth, it seems, is in short supply these days.
We already know that the story about Jessica Lynch's family -- the one told by New York Times' reporter Jayson Blair -- was merely the product of a fanciful imagination. The newspaper is investigating -- as it should.
But there's something else we need to know.
Yesterday the BBC aired a documentary that questioned the very essence of Jessica Lynch's story: her dramatic rescue from an Iraqi hospital.
The BBC says the rescue was staged "like a Hollywood film." The military even supplied its own video version of events.
Indeed, when reporting on the rescue, the military referenced the movie "Blackhawk Down," saying that it was better than the film because everything went right. Sort of like a script that was followed precisely.
But the BBC says witnesses tell a different story. They say Pvt. Lynch was well cared for -- and doctors even offered to send her back to her unit in an ambulance (once the Iraqi Republican Guard had disappeared).
Critics will easily dismiss the BBC version of what occurred. They'll say that we cannot trust Iraqi sources -- and surely the military would not report an untruth.
Perhaps. But the BBC report raises questions that demand answers. The rest of the world will not accept our denials easily. Already international newspapers are trumpeting the "new" version of the truth.
The best course for the United States is to quickly find out what really happened. If the military exaggerated the story, spinning it for our consumption, that's something dangerous and inappropriate in a democracy.
We need to know more; we need the truth.
