Indonesian army still attacking rebels

Jakarta, Indonesia, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- The Indonesian army Friday continued attacks on separatist rebels in devastated Aceh province, despite earlier calling a ceasefire to focus on aid efforts.

"Our security operations continue," Lt. Col. Nachrowi of the military headquarters general information department said, The Australian reported Friday. "The only difference is that it may be less in scale and intensity."

Nachrowi said, "We continue to launch raids into suspected GAM (Free Aceh Movement) areas and our vigilance remains high."

Indonesian military chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto had previously called for a temporary ceasefire with the rebels so both sides could assist relief efforts in the tsunami-devastated province, which bore the majority of Indonesia's 80,000 fatalities.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had Thursday urged rebels to lay down their arms and help rebuild Aceh.

"I call on those who are still raising arms, to come out ... let us use this historic momentum to join and be united again," Yudhoyono said.

Tens of thousands have been killed in the rebels' three-decade fight for independence. The Indonesian government has stepped up its military efforts to suppress the rebels since May 2003.
