BERLIN (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Monday it had sent a team of 41 Marines to Liberia to help reinforce security at the U.S. embassy in Liberia amid intensified fighting.

"The team has been sent to reinforce security at the embassy," said a spokesman for the U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany.

Rebels of Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy, fighting for more than three years to overthrow President Charles Taylor, struck into the capital Monrovia on Saturday and have battled to key bridges that lead to the heart of the city.

The United States on Sunday called for an immediate end to fighting in Liberia and urged the country's neighbors to block the flow of arms to combatants.
