US lawyer sues over terror cases

An American prosecutor has launched a lawsuit against the US attorney general, John Ashcroft, claiming that the justice department has mismanaged terrorist cases.
In an unusual move, Richard Convertino, the assistant US attorney for Detroit, has accused Mr Ashcroft of smearing him and putting an informant's life in jeopardy.

He claims Mr Ashcroft and justice department officials compromised a crucial intelligence source as part of a bureaucratic vendetta.

Mr Convertino says officials punished him for cooperating with a Senate investigation into failures in the war on terror by blowing the cover of an intelligence asset.

The informer fled the country after his name appeared in Detroit newspapers.

"To me, it's shocking," said Steven Kohn, Mr Convertino's lawyer. "They just didn't care about this source, or his safety, or the impact on the war on terror."

A justice department spokesman refused to comment yesterday.

This is the second time the Bush administration has been accused of compromising intelligence sources as retaliation against difficult government bureaucrats.

An investigation is under way into how a conservative commentator acquired the name of a CIA agent who was married to a diplomat who questioned the Bush administration's arguments for an invasion of Iraq.
