Missile Launcher Concerns Area Residents Updated: Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 - 11:44 AM
BETHESDA, Md. - Residents in a Bethesda neighborhood aren't sure why the Navy has erected a missile launcher on the lawn of the U.S. Naval Center.
The large and drab-looking launcher has been there since December, and the Navy is providing few details.
Lieutenant Commander Ed Zeigler tells The Washington Post that it's part of a program designed to tighten national security since the Sept. 11 attacks. He says the six non-nuclear missiles in the launcher could "counter an inbound threat."
But some neighbors are worried. One local peace activist is even considering organizing a vigil.
Others say it looks like and invitation to attack the area, and tell The Post they wish it were better camouflaged.
