Home is sex location of choice for teenagers, study finds

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. -- High school students are most likely to have sex in their own homes, according to a study in the December issue of the journal Pediatrics.
More than one-third of sexually active students in an urban, low-income high school district said the last time they had sex was in their own homes, said study leader Deborah Cohen, a researcher at Rand in Santa Monica, California.
"When youths spend time with each other without adult supervision, they have opportunities to engage in various high- risk behaviors," Cohen wrote in the study.
Teens in single-parent or two-income households may spend 30 hours or more at home without adults to keep a watchful eye on them. Unsupervised time at home may be among the most important factors contributing to teen sex and resulting pregnancies, the study found.
More than 90 percent of teens' most recent sexual encounters took place at their own homes, partners' homes or friends' homes. Only 1 percent of teens had sex in a car and 4 percent took place in hotels.
About a third of students had sex after school and before 6 p.m., roughly as many as took place over the weekend.
"The lack of supervision may counteract some of the benefits of programs that educate youths about the dangers of risky behavior," Cohen wrote.
