According to the Vatican, Benedict was called into the anti-aircraft service by Germany in the last months of World War Two. He deserted his unit and was taken prisoner by U-S troops. In June of 1945, American troops released him from a P-O-W camp and he hitched his way home on a milk truck. Known then as Joseph Ratzinger, he immediately threw himself into studying philosophy and theology at the University of Munich. He earned a doctorate in his mid-20s and quickly got attention from Rome. By the time he was 35, Ratzinger's work on dogma and religion earned him a job at the Vatican.
