Gay-Marriage Amendment Faces Senate Vote This Year, Frist Says March 3 (Bloomberg) -- A constitutional amendment banning gay marriage will come to a U.S. Senate vote this year, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said, drawing Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry into the issue.
``It is clear that we must act,'' Frist said after a press conference in Washington. ``We are gambling with our future if we allow activist judges to redefine marriage for our whole society.''
President George W. Bush said Feb. 24 he supports a constitutional amendment, following a ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Court allowing gay marriages and a decision by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to issue marriage licenses to same- sex couples.
Kerry has said opposes a constitutional amendment, preferring to leave it to the states to decide what type of unions to allow. Kerry voted against a 1996 federal law that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on gay marriages today.
