'Mad Cow' Dog Food Recalled

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The remaining bags of dog food suspected of containing parts from the Canadian cow that had mad cow disease should be recovered by Wednesday, although some of the dog food may have already been consumed, said the U.S. retailer that sold the product.

"I would suspect by the end of today or tomorrow this food should be out of the system. Some of it has probably been fed. Fortunately, we are seeing a lot of it still in stocks," Don Lockman, president of The Pet Pantry International, said on Tuesday.

Dogs cannot contract mad cow disease, but there is concern that the dog food could accidentally be mixed into cattle or other animal feeds.

The Food and Drug Administration notified The Pet Pantry on Monday, when the agency learned from the Canadian government that Pet Pantry had bought dog food that may have included the suspected material.

The suspect dog food was made by Champion Pet Food, of Morinville, Alberta.

About 1,300 bags of dog food are involved in the voluntary recovery, of which a portion had been delivered to customers, said Lockman.

The Pet Pantry, based in Carson City, Nevada, sells dog food for home delivery in about 40 U.S. states plus in Mexico and the Philippines.

"We are talking about a very small amount of product that the firm is taking the responsible action of removing. There is no evidence that dogs ever get the disease," said Stephen Payne, spokesman for the Pet Food Institute, a trade group.

Last week, the Canadian government confirmed a six-year-old cow in Alberta had mad cow disease, formally know as bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The U.S. immediately halted imports of Canadian cattle and beef as well as other livestock and meat products.

The halt of meat imports caused a small interruption in supplies of raw materials for U.S. pet food makers, who switched to domestic supplies.
