Obese people face higher life premiums By Frances Williams Published: April 7 2004 5:00 | Last Updated: April 7 2004 5:00 Life insurers will need to charge fat people higher premiums for cover as the obesity epidemic starts to affect mortality rates and insurers' margins, Swiss Re, the world's largest life and health reinsurer, warned yesterday.
In the US, where a third of adults are obese, death rates were nearly twice what they might have been if obesity levels had remained at early 1970s levels, Swiss Re said. Obesity is also growing rapidly in Europe and in many developing countries. Frances Williams, Geneva
