Study: Fries, Soda Part Of Toddlers' Diets Fruits, Vegetables Largely Absent From Diets
POSTED: 4:22 p.m. EDT October 25, 2003
SAN ANTONIO -- Bad eating habits begin early.
A new study finds that even before their second birthday, many American children are eating too much fat, sugar and salt and too few fruits and vegetables.
The study of more than 3,000 youngsters found significant numbers are downing french fries, pizza, candy and soda.
It found up to a third of children under 2 consumed no fruits or vegetables. For those who did, french fries were the most common selection for children 15 months and older.
Nine percent of children 9 to 11 months old ate fries at least once per day, as did more than 20 percent of those 19 months to 2 years old.
Hot dogs, sausage and bacon also were daily staples for many children.
The study was commissioned by baby-food maker Gerber. It's being presented at a meeting of the American Dietetic Association in San Antonio. Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
