Research: Chopsticks can be harmful

BOSTON, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A Boston University medical school study done in China says eating with chopsticks every day increases the risk of causing joint problems in the hand.

The research says the repetitive movement of pinching the chopsticks together to pick up food could lead to the painful condition osteoarthritis.

The study was done on more than 2,500 Beijing residents aged 60, who ate using chopsticks, BBC reported.

The findings were presented at a meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in Orlando, Fla.

They concluded that further study was needed, but noted the effect was unlikely to deter people from continuing with the age-old practice of using chopsticks.
