FDA: Antidepressants May Be Linked To Kids' Suicide
POSTED: 4:19 p.m. EST October 27, 2003
WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration says some antidepressant drugs undergoing trials in children, including Paxil, may be associated with suicides.
The agency said it's aware of reports in the media and in medical journals about suicides and suicide attempts in children using antidepressants. Officials said these reports are very difficult to interpret, and while the agency said there is no clear connection, it can't rule out a link.
The FDA is alerting doctors about reports of suicidal thinking among juveniles who are participating in clinical studies. The agency also emphasized the need for more data and analyses of the issue.
Currently, only Prozac is approved for use in major depressive disorder among children.
