Quake spawns minor tsunami in Japan

TOKYO, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- A strong Pacific earthquake Wednesday created a minor tsunami that hit Japan's northern and eastern coasts, meteorologists said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the first rush of water Wednesday night was about 16 inches on the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. However, it warned larger surges could follow after an earthquake measuring at least 8.1 on the Richter scale was recorded 240 miles near the Kuril Islands, north of Japan, the BBC said.

Radio and television stations began broadcasting non-stop warnings and calls for evacuation to higher ground.

The earthquake was not felt in Japan and there were no reports of damage.

Meteorologists said Russia's eastern coast was also expected to be battered by waves from the earthquake.

Small tsunami hits Japan
Story :

TOKYO: A small tsunami measuring 40 centimeters (15.75 inches) hit Japan's northeastern coast Wednesday after a massive earthquake, a meteorologist said.

The seismic wave struck Nemuro, a city on the northern island of Hokkaido near the Russian-administered Kuril islands, said an official at the local branch of the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The tsunami was the first reported to hit after the earthquake in the Pacific Ocean that registered 8.1 on the Richter scale and hit at 8:15 pm (1115 GMT).

The wave was far smaller than the potential two-meter tsunamis feared in the warning by the meteorological agency. No damage was immediately reported.
