Katrina Evacuees Rush to Find Housing Before Deadline Updated: Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005 - 8:22 AM
LANDOVER, Md. - Time is running out to find for Hurricane Katrina evacuees in the Washington area to find permanent housing. With the announcement from FEMA that the agency won't pay for hotel rooms as of December 1st, The Washington Post says that 800 people displaced by the storm headed to a closed retail outlet in Landover Saturday to try and get help from government agencies and religious groups.
Jenny Schlager with the Maryland Department of Human Resources tells the Post that she hopes the FEMA deadline will be extended, but if it isn't her department will still help people find new housing "through the FEMA system."
Along with people looking for housing, many went to Landover looking for work, which for some has been harder to find.
