The Pentagon (news - web sites) is asking Congress for broad new powers to buy weapons and parts from foreign suppliers if U.S. contractors are more costly or require more time.
The proposed rewriting of decades-old "Buy American" laws has prompted howls of protest from the shipbuilding industry, labor unions and other business groups, which fear an exodus of manufacturing jobs and the erosion of the U.S. defense industrial base.
"It will put us out of business," said Cynthia Brown, president of the American Shipbuilding Association, which represents the nation's major shipyards, including Northrop Grumman Newport News.
"This would have a huge impact on Virginia and the country," Brown said. "At a time when our economy is going south, I don't think we want to export more manufacturing jobs, especially in the defense area."
