Unemployment hits 20-year low (Filed: 16/04/2004)
The number of people in work in Britain is at its highest level for 20 years, as the claimant count fell for the tenth consecutive month.
A total of 1.43 million people were jobless in the three months to February, a fall of 33,000 over the quarter. The number of people claiming unemployment benefit fell by 4,200 in March to 882,200, the best figure since 1975.
The UK now has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world at 4.8 per cent compared to 11.2 per cent in Spain, 9.4 per cent in France, 9.3 per cent in Germany, 9.2 per cent in Greece and 8.5 per cent in Italy.
Average earnings showed an increase of 4.9 per cent in the year to February, up by 0.2 on the previous month and the highest figure since last July.
Wage growth in private firms increased by 0.3 per cent to 5.1 per cent while in the public sector it remained unchanged at 4.2 per cent.
