Three more suspected SARS cases reported in Massachusetts
By Associated Press Thursday, April 24, 2003
BOSTON -- Two adults and a 1-year-old girl have been added to the state's list of suspected cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome, bringing the total number of cases in Massachusetts to 16.
The girl, from Norfolk County, was exposed to the virus in China and returned to the United States on April 19, according to information posted Wednesday on the state Department of Public Health's Web site.
It was not clear if the girl had been adopted from China or was traveling with family. A message left for a DPH spokeswoman Wednesday night was not immediately returned.
The two adult cases include a 45-year-old Bristol County woman who was exposed to the virus in Toronto, and a 26-year-old Norfolk County man who was exposed in Hong Kong.
None of the three people exposed have been hospitalized, according to DPH. The names and hometowns of suspected cases were not released.
The SARS virus has sickened more than 4,000 people worldwide and killed at least 251. There have been no deaths in the United States.
Symptoms of SARS include fever, shortness of breath, coughing, chills and body aches.
