South Texas Immigrant Bust Turns Into SARS Scare 6 Chinese Immigrants Test Negative Posted: 5:11 p.m. CDT April 25, 2003 Updated: 5:13 p.m. CDT April 25, 2003
LAREDO, Texas -- An illegal immigrant bust in South Texas turned into a severe acute respiratory syndrome scare on Friday.
Six Chinese immigrants were among 16 suspected illegal immigrants who were being smuggled into the United States when a vehicle was stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents near Alice at 5:30 a.m. Friday, Border Patrol officials said. Agents became concerned when one of the Chinese immigrants started shivering.
The Chinese immigrants were taken to a hospital in Laredo where they were evaluated but were found to have no symptoms of any illness.
As of Friday, SARS has killed more than 270 people and infected more than 4,600 worldwide. The United States is reporting 39 probable cases and no deaths.
