The plane, American Airlines Flight 128, remained on the tarmac of the San Jose International Airport nearly an hour after landing because the four reported feeling symptoms of the SARS illness, said spokeswoman Cathy Gaskell. A total of 200 people were on board. Health officials are trying to determine what to do next, she said. "We had five passengers that transferred onto that flight from Hong Kong. Four are expressing that they have symptoms of the SARS, two of which are airline employees," she said. "The pilot on the inboard flight requested to quarantine the aircraft until they could decide what to do with it," Gaskell said. The outbreak that has infected almost 1,900 people started in the southern part of China late last year before showing up in Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Canada, Germany and elsewhere in recent weeks. Deaths have been reported in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Canada, Singapore and Thailand. © 2003 Reuters
