SARS is related to common cold virus

NEWS staff report

SARS is caused by the coronaviruses, a group of viruses that plays a role in causing the common cold. The viruses also infect animals.

Symptoms include fever higher than 100 degrees, headache, discomfort and body aches. After two to seven days, patients with SARS can develop a dry cough and have trouble breathing.

Incubation period for the disease is two to 10 days, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The disease first appeared in Asia, and has killed 161 people worldwide — mostly in China and Hong Kong. In Canada, 13 people have died of the disease.

The virus has sickened more than 3,200 people in 22 countries.

There are 174 suspected cases in the United States, but no one has died. One possible SARS case was being investigated in Indiana, but the illness was determined not to caused by the virus that results in SARS.

Treatment for the respiratory disease is still being developed, and can involve antibiotics, anti-viral agents, steroids and anti-microbial agents, the CDC said.
