Beijing to Cut SARS Hospitals as Toll Drops
Fri May 30, 5:33 PM ET Add Health - Reuters to My Yahoo!

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Health Ministry said on Friday the declining rate of new SARS (news - web sites) infections in Beijing will allow it to cut the number of hospitals designated to deal with the flu-like disease to seven from 19.

The announcement came as the ministry reported seven new SARS cases in the 24 hours to 10 a.m. (10 p.m. EDT on Thursday) on Friday, marking the fifth day in a row of single-digit growth in infections.

It said one more person had died from severe acute respiratory syndrome in the same period, taking the national death toll to 328 and the number of cases to 5,328.

Executive vice health minister Gao Qiang told reporters the plan to cut the number of designated SARS hospitals in the capital, which has had more cases of the flu-like disease than any other city on earth, was a result of the fall in cases.

"This shows that there is a tangible decrease in the number of new cases and an obvious increase of the number of patients discharged from hospitals. The number of SARS patients still in hospitals is declining on a daily basis," he said.

The death logged on Friday and six of the new cases were in hard-hit Beijing.

Despite the fall in the number of news cases over the past few weeks, the ministry called for vigilance.

"At present, the SARS epidemic in China has shown signs of alleviation. However, we should realize clearly that the task of controlling SARS is still arduous. SARS is still not fully known to us," it said in a statement.

China needs "to continue to be vigilant although the epidemic is declining," the ministry added.

At least 1,750 patients were still in hospital.
