Guangdong, the region where severe acute respiratory syndrome surfaced last winter, had reported 1,274 cases by the time the disease ebbed in June. But according to Wang Ming, vice director of the Guangzhou Disease Prevention and Control Center, later blood tests determined that only 1,062 actually had SARS, the Shanghai Morning Post reported. The others all were sick with flu or pneumonia, he said. SARS killed 349 people and sickened 5,327 in China. Health experts say they expect the illness could re-emerge during the autumn-winter flu season, though they say they can't estimate how large the outbreak might be. Chinese health officials were not immediately available for comment. Earlier, doctors had said the number of true SARS cases might be lower than reported, as health officials sought to contain the highly contagious disease by isolating many patients suspected of having SARS, despite a lack of reliable diagnostic tests.
