Foam test reveals damage

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A chunk of foam test-fired Friday at a mockup of a shuttle wing has given investigators the closest thing yet to a smoking gun in their search for the cause of the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

The foam blasted from a high-powered gun cracked a carbon heat-shield panel from the left wing of Columbia's sister ship, Discovery. Some experts believe a loose piece of foam insulation struck and cracked the wing of Columbia at launch Jan. 16.

They also believe that crack caused the shuttle to disintegrate upon re-entry Feb. 1, killing all seven crew members.

"This is the first evidence that we have that a piece of foam can in fact damage a piece of flight-reinforced carbon panel," said Scott Hubbard of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. "To me, that's a step forward."
