But Democrats say that'll be as close as he ever gets to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Pickering's nomination by President Bush has been blocked for two years by Democratic opposition. But Republicans hope that lobbying by the judge and his congressman son Chip may give him a chance to win confirmation by the full Senate. Pickering has the support of powerful Democrats here at home, including the governor and the chairman of the state Legislative Black Caucus.
