Energy bill gives $23 billion in tax breaks Oil, gas, electrical utilities get taxpayer dollars
By ABC12/The Associated Press Capitol Hill — (11/20/03)-- Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle is ready to support the comprehensive energy bill.
An aide says he will also oppose an effort by opponents to filibuster the measure because it shields the makers of a gasoline additive from liability lawsuits.
A key reason Daschle is supporting the bill is because it calls for a doubling of the use of ethanol. South Dakota is a major producer of the corn-based product.
Some Republicans, meanwhile, are prepared to break ranks because of the provision that protects the makers of M-T-B-E. Others echo Democratic claims that with $23 billion in tax incentives, the measure contains too many giveaways.
Some Democrats are thinking about filibustering over the issue, but it is unclear whether they have the 40 votes to stall the bill. Daschle's support is seen as critical to passing the bill.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has set a vote for tomorrow that would end debate and force a final vote on the eleven-hundred page bill.
