European Central Bank Chief to Remain in Post VOA News 05 Apr 2003, 19:53 UTC The head of the European Union Central Bank has agreed to continue in the post until a new bank leader is prepared.
Wim Duisenberg said Saturday he would stay past his scheduled retirement date in July, to ensure a smooth transition at the bank.
Finance Ministers of EU nations agreed during a meeting in Athens earlier Saturday to ask Mr. Duisenberg to remain in the post.
The request comes after the top candidate for the bank presidency, Jean-Claude Trichet, went on trial in an accounting scandal in France. Mr. Trichet has been accused of failing to spot incorrect accounting reports at the state-run bank Credit Lyonnais in the 1990's.
A verdict in Mr. Trichet's trial is expected in June.
