Tribals blockade India steel mill

Thousands of tribespeople armed with bows and arrows have blocked road and rail traffic near a steel mill in the Indian state of Orissa.
The tribespeople are demanding that land acquired for the state-run Rourkela Steel Plant nearly 50 years ago should be returned to them.

They also want jobs for a member of each family displaced by the plant.

The move came a week after violent protests left 13 dead at the planned site of a new steel mill in the state.

Hundreds of trucks laden with iron ore meant for the Rourkela plant have been stranded at various entry points to the city since Monday evening.

The protestors have also laid siege to railway tracks, holding up six passenger and 11 goods trains since Tuesday morning.

Angry protestors have set alight to three wagons since Monday evening.

On 2 January 12 tribespeople and a policeman were killed after officers opened fire on demonstrators at the proposed new site at Kalinganagar.
