Russia launches military phase of major exercises in Pacific
Agence France-Presse
Vladivostok (Russia), August 23

The military phase of the sweeping exercises in Russia's Pacific far east, launched on early Saturday, will not be affected by an ongoing search for a missing helicopter carrying a regional Governor and his top aides in the nearby Kamchatka peninsula, officials said.

Some 75 ships, over 20 aircraft and some 30,000 troops will join forces with US coastguard ships as well as teams from Japan and South Korea for the exercises, the officials said.

Over the next six days, the Russian navy, border guards and customs services will engage in various manoeuvres including fighting seafood poachers, preventing terrorist acts and tackling the consequences of technological catastrophes.

One of these episodes will see the combined forces storm an oil base captured by hypothetical terrorists, while another will bid to resolve disasters like radiation poisoning or a major oil spill.

Meanwhile, 1,300 rescuers, 20 aircraft and more than 40 ships and boats were combing Kamchatka for the Mi-8 helicopter which vanished on Wednesday along with at least 17 passengers and three crew.

The helicopter, carrying Igor Farkhutdinov, Governor of the oil-rich Sakhalin region, and his top aides, disappeared an hour after leaving the town of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky for the town of Severo-Kurilsk, on one of the northern Kuril islands.

The earlier phase of the far east exercises concerned civil defence and security, including rescue operations and tackling illegal immigration.
