D.C. Stores Worry About Development
July 12, 2007 - 12:10pm

WASHINGTON - Development in Columbia Heights has some mom and pop shops worried they will become a thing of the past.

"The fear is with all this new development and the fancy, big national chains that they might be pushed out," says Mercedes Lemp, director of D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's Office on Latino Affairs.

The neighborhood is getting a new Target, and already has new housing and a Giant.

There are more than 50,000 Latino residents in the Washington area, according to the Office of Latino Affairs. In the Columbia Heights alone more than 10 percent of the population is Latino.

Lemp says city officials are working with the mom and pop shops, but to stay in business, they might need to rework their business plans.

"What I've seen is that a lot of Latino business open and really cater to Latino communities," says Lemp. "In order for the businesses to stay in business they are going to also have to cater to different populations."
