Missing 81 minutes of bomber's life

The plea for help in piecing together the last 81 minutes of Hasib Hussain's life is the "key appeal" in the investigation, Met Police chief Sir Ian Blair has said.

The 18-year-old, who lived with his family in the Holbeck area of Leeds, had told his parents he was going to the capital with friends.

On the day of the London bombings - 7 July - Hussain was initially captured by CCTV footage at 0720 BST setting off from Luton station.

All four bombers set off together from the station where two cars linked to the bombings, one containing explosives, were seized in raids on Tuesday.

Simultaneous blasts

In the Luton CCTV footage, Hussain is pictured wearing jeans and a casual jacket as well as a rucksack on his back which police believe contained a bomb.

He then boarded a Thameslink train to King's Cross with his three fellow suicide bombers.

At 0826 BST, the four, all wearing rucksacks, are pictured together at King's Cross before splitting up.

Police say they need to establish Hussain's movements between this point and the moment, 81 minutes later, when his bomb exploded on the number 30 bus as it arrived in Tavistock Square at 0947 BST.

The other three bombers simultaneously detonated their devices at 0850 BST.

At least 14 people died after Hussain's bomb went off 57 minutes later than the other three.

Police are anxious to find out whether Hussain received last-minute orders to change his plans.

One theory is that he could not board a Northern Line train because the service was suspended and so took the bus instead.

Some witnesses on the bus said they saw a man rummaging around in a rucksack immediately before the bus exploded.

Anti-terrorist branch head Peter Clarke said on Friday that there were about 80 people on the bus when the bomb went off.

Detectives planned to speak to all of them, he added.
