RESPECT RIGHTS, SAYS CHERIE BLAIR

Cherie Blair, wife of the prime minister, has reportedly urged courts to ensure governments respect the rights of suspects in the international fight against terrorism, writes Christopher Adams.

A prominent human rights lawyer, Mrs Blair said during a law lecture in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that an independent judiciary has "the important task of reviewing executive action against the benchmark of human rights".

"In our troubled times where terrorism, division and suspicion of others are the order of the day, this role for judges is perhaps more vital than ever before," news agencies quoted her as telling lawyers, diplomats and academics.

She said governments had a responsibility to keep the public safe and prevent incidents such as the recent bombings in London, but stressed that it was "all too easy for us to respond to such terror in a way which undermines our commitment to our most deeply held values and convictions".

Courts had to "act as guardians of the weakest, poorest and most marginalised members of society against the hurly burly of majoritarian politics", she added.

Mrs Blair used quotations from the chief justice of Israel to make her point that the war on terrorism must be conducted within the law, adding in her owns words: "The choice of options in response [to terrorism] belongs to the executive or legislature. But these choices, too, are not unbridled."
