Officials: Timing Devices Discovered in London
Possibly Unexploded Bombs Found
By ABCNEWS.com

July 7 — In what appears to be the first major break in the London terrorist attacks, U.S. authorities tell ABC News that police in London have recovered key parts of the timing devices that set off the bombs, suggesting they were planted in packages or bags and left behind.

Timers Used in Blasts, Police Say; Parallels to Madrid Are Found
By DON VAN NATTA Jr. and ELAINE SCIOLINO

LONDON, July 7 - Investigators searching for clues in the attacks here said Thursday that the three bombs used in the subway apparently were detonated by timers, not suicide bombers, and that a fourth device may have been intended for a target other than the city bus that it destroyed.

Simultaneity of London blasts suggests bombers used timers

By The Associated Press
Sunday, July 10, 2005

LONDON (AP) - The nearly simultaneous bombings of three London subway trains bolstered the theory that the explosions were detonated by timing devices rather than suicide bombers, police said Saturday, as they radically altered their original assessment that the blasts occurred over a 26-minute period.

They said the bombs were made of "high explosives," not homemade materials. Authorities would not specify, however, whether the ingredients were military grade, a detail that could indicate the plotters' level of sophistication, resources and international connections.

Terrorist gang 'used military explosives'
By Michael Evans, Sean O’Neill and Philip Webster

A SINGLE bombmaker using high-grade military explosives is believed to be responsible for building the four devices that killed more than 50 people last week, The Times can reveal.

Similar components from the explosive devices have been found at all four murder sites, leading detectives to believe that each of the 10lb rucksack bombs was the work of one man. They also believe that the materials used were not home made but sophisticated military explosives, possibly smuggled into Britain from the Balkans.

"The nature of the explosives appears to be military, which is very worrying," said Superintendent Christophe Chaboud, the chief of the French anti-terrorist police, who was in London to help Scotland Yard.

'Military quality' bombs in London
By Don Van Natta Jr. and Elaine Sciolino The New York Times
WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 2005

LONDON British investigators believe that the bombs used in the coordinated terrorist attacks here contained "military quality" high-grade explosives, British and European counterterrorism officials said.

Investigators said they still did not know whether the explosives contained plastic materials, or were made some other way. But they said the material used in the bombs was similar to the kind manufactured for military use or made for highly technical commercial purposes, such as dynamite used for precision explosions to demolish buildings or in mining.
