Riot police fire water cannon at EU protesters in Dublin

01 May 2004

Riot police fired water cannon Saturday at several hundred protesters outside a Dublin park where EU leaders feted the enlargement of the European Union, reporters at the scene said.

Twenty-five people were arrested and a female police officer was hurt after being hit on the head by a flying bottle, a spokesman for the Garda, Ireland's national police, told AFP. There was no word of injuries among the protesters.

RTE public radio said that those arrested had come from London and the Welsh capital Cardiff, and that Prime Minister Bertie Ahern had expressed "disappointment" with the confrontation.

Sky News television showed live footage of helmeted police with plastic shields holding back the youthful crowd, many of whom had been seen earlier at a rally outside the General Post Office in central Dublin.

Some scuffling was seen, but there were no major clashes as twilight fell and the riot police pushed the crowd, diminishing in number, back in the direction of Dublin's city centre.

The incident took place at Ashtown Gate, one of the entrances into Phoenix Park where EU leaders were dining at the Farmleigh state guest house after a ceremonial raising of the flags of the 25 EU member states.

Some 5,000 police, plus 2,500 troops, have been deployed to ensure security in Dublin, and two water cannon were borrowed from Northern Ireland to deal with any serious street incidents.
