Letter bombs spark review of EU security

BRUSSELS, Belgium—Two more letter bombs to senior members of the European Parliament burst into flames and another was intercepted yesterday — the seventh since Dec. 27 — leading to a review of European Union security.

They scorched furniture, leaving those who opened the letters, here and in Manchester, England, frightened but unharmed. Investigators suspect Italy's Informal Anarchic Federation, is a likely source for the exploding mail, which so far has caused no injuries.

"We don't know whether there is a terrorist background to this, or some kind of warning in whatever form, or whether it is just a bad joke,'' said Hans-Gert Poettering, who leads the conservative faction Europe's Parliament, one of three men targeted yesterday.

In Rome, European anti-terrorism officials set up a joint task force yesterday to investigate the mail bombs.

The letters that went off yesterday did so in Poettering's Brussels office and the Manchester office of British Socialist legislator Gary Titley.

A Titley staffer opened a parcel that caught fire, enveloping the office in acrid smoke. "There can be no justification for these attacks, '' Titley said.

A staffer at Poettering's office opened a padded envelope that appeared to contain a book, and it burst into flames.

An identical parcel to Spaniard Jose Ignacio Salafranca, of the European People's Party, was neutralized by bomb experts here. Both were postmarked Dec. 22 in Bologna, the Italian city suspected to be the origin of the other bombs.
