Chirac: France Loses Influence if Rejects EU Treaty Reuters
Apr. 14, 2005 - France will lose its political influence in the European Union at least temporarily if it rejects the EU constitution in a referendum on May 29, President Jacques Chirac said Thursday.
"If by chance France did not vote in favor (of the constitution), France would at least for a certain time cease to exist politically at the heart of this Europe," Chirac told a televised debate.
Chirac said France must be strong and well organized, following rules which would be set by the constitution.
Chirac used the debate with 83 young people to launch his defense of the constitution, saying the charter could not be renegotiated if France rejects it.
The treaty is intended to make decision making in the EU smoother following its enlargement from 15 to 25 members last May. It requires the approval of all member states to go into force.
Chirac said rejecting the treaty would stop "European construction" in its tracks, making clear he believed further integration of the EU would be held up.
The president and his conservative government face a tough battle to win over voters because opinion polls put the anti-treaty campaign clearly ahead with just six weeks to go until the referendum.
