Sequoia Voting wins spot on Ohio list
After a month-long legal battle, Sequoia Voting Systems of Oakland has won a spot on a list of approved voting machine vendors for the state of Ohio.

The company, one of a handful to sell electronic touch-screen voting systems, has been selected for inclusion on the State of Ohio's approved list of voting technology vendors. The list also includes Sequoia rivals Diebold Elections Systems, Election Systems & Software (ES&S) and Maximus/Hart Intercivic/ DFM Associates.

Counties in Ohio can choose vendors from the list to update their voting systems. Congress set aside $161 million for Ohio last year to replace punch-card and lever voting machines by November of 2004.

Last month, Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell decided to leave Sequoia off the final list, on the grounds that the company's prices were high compared to its rivals. Sequoia sued and won a temporary restraining order against the release of the list.

In a statement Wednesday, Blackwell said he negotiated and reached agreement with the company in an effort to avoid a drawn-out legal battle.

"The implementation of election reform in Ohio is far too important to be sidetracked by mounting litigation and legal appeals," Blackwell said in the statement. "It is time to move forward as we continue with the process of providing Ohioans with voting equipment that is more accurate, more reliable and easier to use."

Sequoia President Tracey Graham said in a statement that the company "has an unequaled track record for delivering top quality election systems on-time or ahead of schedule at a competitive price."
