New council joins lawsuit opposing rezoning for Wal-Mart
FRONT ROYAL, Va. Front Royal Town Council is joining forces with a grass-roots group to contest the rezoning of land for a proposed Wal-Mart.
Town Council voted in July 2003 to rezone 121 acres from residential to commercial for a new Supercenter in town. Then all members of council and the mayor were turned out of office in May elections.
The new council has hired a new attorney, and is now fighting the action.
Rockingham County Circuit Judge James Lane granted a motion by the town and the group, Save Our Gateway, to delay trial of the lawsuit from September to January.
The trial was moved to Rockingham because all Warren County judges recused themselves.
Wal-Mart attorney John Foote says he did not support the request to delay the trial.
