Monsanto, others win antitrust case

Monsanto says court favors the seed companies and denies allegations of price-fixing conspiracy.
October 1, 2003: 4:50 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Reuters) - Monsanto Co. said Wednesday that a federal court ruling has effectively ended class-action anti-trust allegations that it and other companies conspired to control the world market for genetically modified crops.

The decision, handed down by U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel in St. Louis, Missouri, rejected plaintiffs' requests for class-action status and dealt a significant blow to efforts by farmer groups to prove the world's largest seed companies conspired to fix prices.

Plaintiffs attorney Richard Lewis said his clients planned to appeal the ruling and would continue to push for a class-action case.

In addition to Monsanto (MON: Research, Estimates), the other defendants in the case are Pioneer Hi-Bred of DuPont Co. (DD: Research, Estimates), Bayer AG's Bayer CropScience and Syngenta AG of Switzerland.
